The Market Opportunity
In early 2013, when the idea for Mindboot was conceived, Coursera had 1.9 million registered users, Udacity had 160,000 registered users, and edX had 150,000 students from over 160 countries registered for just their first class.
The first public numbers representing Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) enrollment, spoke to the market opportunity we had to be the best resource for MOOC students. There was a lot happening on the supply side for online education, but only two small websites were catering to the demands of the target market.
As MOOC offerings continuously grew, the bigger the need was for a centralized destination to shop these options. Additionally, the quality of these courses needed to be user-regulated. Features I envisioned Mindboot building included course ratings and reviews by users so that our catalog could be sorted and filtered by the popularity and quality of the course.
